The India Association of Minnesota (IAM), through its Government Relations Committee (GRC), hosted the Immigration Policy Changes Community Forum on July 16, 2026. The event brought together immigration attorneys, public officials, and community members for an informative webinar on the rapidly evolving U.S. immigration landscape and its impact on immigrants, students, professionals, employers, and families.

The forum witnessed an outstanding turnout, reflecting the community’s strong interest in understanding recent immigration developments and seeking reliable, expert guidance. The active participation and thoughtful questions from attendees made the event an engaging and meaningful platform for learning and discussion.

George Maxwell discussed how recent federal enforcement initiatives are increasingly relying on integrated data systems and technology to monitor immigration compliance. The session covered developments related to immigration enforcement tools, continuous visa vetting, workplace investigations, and the growing importance of maintaining accurate records and lawful immigration status.

H-1B, Employment-Based Immigration, and Compliance

The discussion also explored current trends affecting employment-based immigration, including increased Requests for Evidence (RFEs), biometric verification, evolving H-1B policies, employer compliance requirements, labor investigations, and proposed wage regulations that may impact future employment sponsorships.

Travel Restrictions and Visa Processing

Attendees received updates on changing travel policies, visa processing procedures, expanded interview requirements, travel restrictions under presidential proclamations, and recommendations for international travelers to carefully plan travel while maintaining lawful immigration status.

The panel reviewed proposed changes affecting F-1 and J-1 students, including possible revisions to duration of status, program extensions, school transfers, and other regulatory changes that may impact international students pursuing education in the United States.

Marc Prokosch highlighted recent litigation trends involving immigration processing delays and emphasized the importance of verifying voter registration records for non-citizens in Minnesota. Representative Sandra Feist discussed how state lawmakers and the Office of New Americans can support immigrant communities through available resources, legislative initiatives, and connections to government agencies.
