📥 Community Safety & Rights Toolkit (2026)

We have created 9 different scenarios that might be applicable to you or your family members. These guides provide clear, actionable steps on how to handle various interactions with law enforcement and federal agents. The scenarios covered are – International Students, Lawful Permanent Residents, Immigrant Workers, U.S. Citizens, Business Owners, Refugees, U&T Visa Holders, U.S. Visitor Visa and Asylum Seekers Guide.


🛡️ Precautions Ahead of Time

  • Carry essential documents: Identification, Green Cards, visas, passports.
  • Prepare a safety plan: Know your rights and emergency contacts.
  • Have a Know Your Rights card: Carry one for quick reference.
  • Preparation for children:
    • Power of attorney for childcare.
    • Emergency school contacts.
    • Written medical and legal authorization.

🛑 If You Are Detained

  • Request a lawyer immediately.
  • Inform officers of medical or childcare needs.
  • Do not provide false information.

⚖️ Key Rights

  • Right to remain silent.
  • Right to a lawyer.
  • Right to refuse searches.
  • Right to observe and record ICE activity.

Most importantly, DO NOT: Post unverified information or interfere with investigations.

IAM hosted a community information session with Plymouth city leadership to address growing concerns about federal immigration enforcement activities.

Immigration Lawyers Session

IAM hosted an immigration rights education session with three volunteer attorneys on Jan 28 with over 200 community members attending.

The session emphasized constitutional rights awareness and proper documentation. Documents shared during the session are available here.

Guidance from the Consulate General of India

In our ongoing commitment to keeping the community safe and informed, IAM has been in direct communication with the Consulate General of India in Chicago.

In response to recent concerns regarding federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota, IAM reached out to the Consulate to clarify the rights and protections available to Indian nationals. Below is the official guidance provided by the Consulate to help Indian passport holders, students, and professionals navigate emergency situations and assert their consular rights.
