One Vote One Voice
An IAM Community Engagement Event
Minnesota's 22nd Secretary of State (SOS), Steve Simon met with the Indian community members on Monday afternoon, October 21, 2024 at the Eden Prairie Library. IAM Board member Sanjay Terakanambi opened the informative session and introduced Steve Simon.
SOS Simon stated that "Democracy is our business".
He went on to state that elections are key to democracy. The responsibilities of the office of the Minnesota Secretary of State is to oversee the election process including the certification of all election equipment given public accuracy tests, report unofficial election results and post election audits and reviews. The SOS does not count votes. That is done by each district and is decentralized by design. The goal is always to have a high turnout and low drama. Minnesota is a champion, being #1 in the last 3 out of 4 elections for highest turnout. Minnesota has an 80% turnout among eligible voters (not registered voters). This is because Minnesota has voter friendly laws; easy access and security of voting lists. For over 50 years, Minnesota has had same day registration. Voter registrations aare run through multiple data bases. Steve Simon authored a bill for "vote from home" in 2013. He stated that it saved the 2020 election during COVID. Minnesota is always building a better election system and proposals are for automatic registration and pre-registration for 16-17 year olds.
The Minnesota election system is clean and accurate. Paper ballots are kept for 2 years as back up. The structure is accurate and secure. Minnesota also has a robust media which is good for elections. SOS Simon spoke the reasons that there have been only 3 non-legal votes in 15 years, the political party balance requirement for election judges and how curbside voting is handled for those unable to physically enter their polling place. For more information go to mnvotes.gov.
IAM sincerely thanks SOS Steve Simon for taking time during election season to educate the attendees. Thank you to Sanjay Terakanambi and Shruti Joshi for arranging the event.

Mahati Rayadurgam
Twelve years of training culminates in a solo concert.
On June 29, 2024, Wayzata High School graduate Mahati Rayadurgam entered into a lineage of artistic practice that traces its roots back nearly 3,000 years. Her arangetram—a solo dance performance, spanning two-and-a-half-hours—is a graduation in its own right, marking her debut as a qualified bharatanatyam artist.
Bharatanatyam is one of the most widely practiced styles of classical dance in India. “I think that the best way to describe it is that it’s a dance vocabulary and style that encompasses both a very emotive, personal storytelling as well as abstract movement to complex rhythms,” says Suchi Sairam, founder of Kala Vandanam Dance Company in St. Paul.
Sairam has been Rayadurgam’s dance teacher for the past 12 years and has been working closely with the 18-year-old over the course of a year to prepare her for this performance. “In this debut concert, the dancer must be able to perform all of the fundamental aspects of the [bharatanatyam] repertoire in a suite of eight to 10 dances, based on their years of training,” Sairam says. “This debut is a major milestone for a dancer, to publicly demonstrate their high level of competence in the art form. It is also considered to be a launching point as an artist.”

Bento - A Children's Magazine
Recently, our founder, Vatsala passed away at a young age. To honor her legacy of multicultural storytelling and celebrate the joy of creative explorations, we have built Bento, a children's magazine (for ages 8+) which is the world's only global South-Asian children's magazine. The mission is to create immersive experiences so that children (ages 8-12 for this magazine) are encouraged to read and learn about the world.
This illustrated magazine shares culture, history, and storytelling. It is a platform for children to learn about stories from South Asia promoting multicultural storytelling, unity, and building bridges between the children of the world. The student reporters are from India, US (including Austin), Canada, and Pakistan. Children also have opportunities to contribute to Bento's future issues or engage creatively with activities, book recommendations, and stories.
Bento's first issue will launch on October 14th and it is on the theme "where the wild things are". This will cover topics around wildlife conservation, books, activities, and more. Contributors for the issue include award-winning writers like Brij Nath Betab, Varun Grover, Aftab Shaikh, Santhini Govindan, Professor Shah Mahmoud Hanifi, Shivani, J. Ramanand, and artists including Janan Abir, Tishya Malya, Neeta Desai, Chandrima Chatterjee, and more. We have a special section of the magazine where student reporters (between 9 to 14 years) have shared their stories and interviewed conservationists including some from the City of Austin. Bento will be available at Ann Arbor District Library, Austin Public Library, Bee Cave Library, and many schools and bookstores nationwide and in India.
70% children's and YA books in the US have leads that are animals or white and only 10% books K-12 are written by authors of color. The Bento team truly believes that all kids deserve to see themselves in stories, and this is an effort to bridge the gaps, while also spotlighting work from the diaspora.
