India Association of MN (IAM) is pleased to announce an Essay Contest for MN High School students!

Mahatma Gandhi was born in Gujarat, India on October 2, 1869. He was a lawyer, politician, writer, and social activist who became the leader of the Indian nationalist movement against  the British rule in India. A persuasive speaker and activist, Gandhi used a doctrine of non-violent protest (called Satyagraha) to peacefully protest British oppression of India. His tactics gained followers around the world and successfully achieved political and social progress in India.

Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy and approach of non-violent protest became a model for social activists around the world, including leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela. Non-violent protests continue today as people demonstrate for world peace and social justice across the United States and the world.
